Wild brawl at NYC high school was a ‘near riot’

A video showing students in a wild brawl at a Bronx high school has emerged on social media.

A source said the melee occurred Oct. 22 at Evander Childs High School and lasted for about 10 minutes.

Cellphone video posted on Facebook, apparently shot by a student, shows students swinging wildly at one another with no adults in sight.

School safety officers had to push past a huge crowd of students watching the fight — with some straining to raise their smartphones high in the air to capture the action.

“It was a near riot,” said Gregory Floyd, president of the Teamsters Local 237, the union that represents school safety officers.

“The students outnumber the faculty, so it was absolute mayhem.”

After the officers finally began breaking apart the students, the brawl spilled into a stairwell before the video ended.

Floyd said the fight continued as the combatants tumbled down the stairwell and eventually spread to three different floors.

The NYPD was not immediately aware of the incident.

“This video is disturbing, and there is no place for violent behavior in or outside of our schools,” said a DOE spokesman.

“We have had additional counselors and additional school safety support at the Evander Childs campus and are continuing to support the school community.”
