CROWN HEIGHTS — Two students are facing charges for assaulting classmates in separate incidents in Crown Heights schools, police said.
A 16-year-old student at Medgar Evers College Preparatory High School has been charged with robbery, assault, menacing and harassment for allegedly breaking the nose of a 13-year-old classmate after the younger student tried to get back $5 the older boy had stolen.
Police said the 16-year-old asked the younger boy for a dollar inside the school at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Sept. 18. When the victim refused to give him the cash, he forcibly removed $5 from his pants pocket.
The 13-year-old then followed him into a bathroom to ask for the money back. Inside the room, the older boy punched him in the face multiple times, breaking his nose, then returned the money and told the 13-year-old “we’re cool,” court documents said.
The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital and underwent surgery for his wounds two days after the assault, police said.
The 16-year-old is being tried as an adult and is due back in court on Nov. 16, court records say. His attorney from the Legal Aid Society could not be reached for comment.
The incident took place just days after another high school student was arrested in the neighborhood for a separate incident at the Prospect Heights High School complex on Classon Avenue.
On Sept. 7 inside the school, police said 18-year-old Naziyr McMillan grabbed a female student’s genitals, groped her breast, then blocked her from leaving the room while he tried to kiss her.
McMillan is charged with forcible touching, sexual abuse and harassment, court records show, and is due back in court on Oct. 2. He is also facing marijuana possession charges for an unrelated arrest in July in Cypress Hills. His attorney from Brooklyn Defender Services could not be reached for comment.
Department of Education spokeswoman Miranda Barbot said in a statement “the safety and security of students and staff is our top priority.”
“The incident that took place at Medgar Evers College Preparatory High School earlier this week was immediately reported to the NYPD and the school has taken appropriate disciplinary action. The incident that took place on the Prospect Heights High School Campus was swiftly addressed by the school and the matter is under investigation by the NYPD,” she said.
Other notable incidents in this week’s blotter from the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and East Flatbush include:
► A 22-year-old man was arrested for robbing and beating a food deliveryman on Empire Boulevard on Sept. 15. at approximately 12:30 a.m. Issiaha Beatty, 22, and another suspect, tried to pay for food from the victim with a fake $50 bill, the 17-year-old deliveryman told police. When the worker realized it was a fake bill, Beatty punched him in the face, took the food and $22 he had in cash and fled on foot. Beatty has been charged with possession of a forged document, assault, harassment and petit larceny, court records show, and is due back in court on Nov. 29. The other suspect has not yet been apprehended. Beatty was previously arrested for an armed robbery in 2016 and is facing multiple burglary, assault and weapons charges in that case. His legal representative from Brooklyn Defender Services could not be reached for comment.
► Two 18-year-old women were robbed at gunpoint by a man who took their cellphones and one of their bags. The robbery took place at about 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 15 inside a Rogers Avenue apartment building near Montgomery Street. The women were in the hallway when the suspect came up to them, threatened them with a gun and forcibly took one of the girl’s bag and their phones, then ran up a staircase. The victims were uninjured during the robbery. No suspect has been identified.
► A 30-year-old man was injured in a shooting outside of a local playground on Sept. 16. The man walked into Kings County Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left foot. Police determined he’d been shot on Sterling Street near Nostrand Avenue, next to Marc and Jason’s Playground behind M.S. 61, at approximately 6:53 p.m. Police found five shell casings at the scene. It’s unclear if the man was an intended target in the shooting. No suspect has been identified.
► A 23-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint for his wallet as he returned to his Rutland Road home on Sept. 18. The suspect followed the man into the lobby of his building near the corner of Flatbush Avenue and threatened him with a gun, then told him to hand over his wallet. The man fled with the victim’s credit and debit cards and state I.D. The 23-year-old was uninjured during the mugging. No suspect has been identified in the robbery.
