Local 237 Peace Officers put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our City’s schools, colleges, hospitals, agencies and streets safe. Yet the City denies us line of duty injury pay and other benefits that City Police Officers are entitled to. It’s high time the City recognizes our sacrifices by listening and responding to our needs.

Certified Peace Officer’s duties are far more similar to uniformed services than civilian employees. It is a part of our jobs to make arrests, carry out searches, use physical force and take custody of firearms. Because we have the same contract as city workers without law enforcement duties, our specific needs are not addressed in the negotiation process.

By creating a separate bargaining unit for Local 237 Peace Officer titles, we can concentrate on our issues – proper equipment, sick and disability leave, pensions and inadequate pay – directly at the table. And by creating a separate bargaining unit, we will benefit from the strength, experience and unity of all Local 237 Peace officers. We’ve taken a number of steps to create a separate bargaining unit for all Local 237 Peace Officers:

  • Passed a City law (and over-rode the Mayor’s Veto) to give School Safety Agents, Taxi and Limousine Inspectors, Juvenile Justice Officers and Peace Officers employed in the departments of Juvenile Justice, Homeless Services and Administration for Children’s Services uniformed status. The law is currently being challenged by the Mayor in the Courts.
  • Working at the State level to get Peace Officers working at the HHC, Housing Authority and CUNY uniformed status.

Until we achieve our goal of a separate Local 237 Uniformed Bargaining unit, please check in with under your employer (on previous page) for updates.
