Helping Yourself Not Housing Politicians should not do what is politically advantageous, but rather what is morally significant. Here are some facts: From 2001-2008, NYCHA accumulated a deficit of $611 million, including $450 million which was cut from funding for renovations including elevator repair. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has not joined Local 237 Teamsters to demand more federal funding so that Washington will meet its moral and fiscal obligation to fund public housing and protect its residents. Nor has Stringer lobbied for money from the City or State. But he has held press conferences and spent tax payer dollars on reports which point out the obvious but do nothing to address the problem [High Failure Rates Found in City Elevator Inspections]. It was a wonderful moment for personal publicity for Stringer, but not for public housing and not for a higher morality in government Submitted by: Gregory Floyd President, Local 237 Teamsters 216 West 14th Street New York, NY 10011 646-638-8595 |
