Newsline: February 2001 BUSINESS NOT QUITE 'AS USUAL' AFTER FIRE TOTALS OFFICE Since a fire destroyed the Bay Shore offices of the Long Island Division and damaged many members' records January 5, union representatives have been working diligently to continue to provide as normal service as possible to the membership. "We have temporarily relocated in a small space in the Town of Babylon," said Division Director Richard Hendershot, "and are looking for someplace that will adequately fill our needs. Although it will take some time to get back to operating normally, everyone is doing whatever they can to assure that the members receive assistance with any questions or problems that may arise." Local 237 President Carl Haynes, in a letter to Long Island Division members, extended his sympathy to all those "deeply shaken by this misfortune." He added that, "Local 237 will be using all of its resources to insure that we are able to maintain the same quality of services to all of our Long Island members." Shortly after the fire in the two-story building at 28 Park Ave. was extinguished, Hendershot and other union representatives began hauling water-soaked records out of the almost totally destroyed structure. "The new number to reach the union is 631-957-3164," Hendershot said. "However, if you call the old office number, 631-666-5700, your call will be redirected to the new temporary quarters. Faxes can be sent to 631-957-3019." That number can also be used to contact Business Agents Kenneth Yurcak, who handles Babylon Town; John Sepulveda, who covers members in the Brentwood schools; James Brockwell, Islip blue collar; Judith Campbell, Islip white collar, and Terese Dahl, who deals with Off-Track Betting members in Suffolk. "Of course, we will do everything we can to provide normal services to the membership," Hendershot said, "but it should be understood that this is an unusual and trying time because of the fire." He urged those who can to contact their union liaisons whenever possible to try to find answers to their questions or to advise them of any problems they are encountering.
