School Safety Agent in Graphic Lesson

The young students at Public School 111 learned first hand what their teachers mean when they say "help your neighbor" on the morning of April 27.

School Safety Agent Gerardo Fonseca was guarding the front door of the school on West 53rd St in Manhattan when he heard shouting and saw two men running down the street.

The pursuer was shouting for someone to stop the man he was chasing and to call the police. Fonseca immediately rushed out and stopped the lead runner. "He looked like he was going to reach for a weapon, but he stopped quickly when I told him to 'Freeze'," Fonseca said. He held the man until his pursuer arrived.

"He told me he was a cab driver and that the man he was chasing had just run out of his cab without paying," Fonseca said. He held the fare-beater for the police, took part in his booking on criminal charges, and then returned to his duties at the school.
