Newsline: May 2001 DAUGHTERS' DAY BRIGHTENS LOCAL A group of 16 young ladies visited Local 237 headquarters in Manhattan April 26 to get a look at what the world of work is all about. The occasion was the annual "Take Our Daughters to Work Day" at which the youngsters talk to their Moms and Dads, Aunts, Uncles or Grandparents about their various jobs with the union and receive "hands-on" training with various business machines. At a breakfast in the Executive Board room, the youngsters were greeted by Local 237 Secretary-Treasurer Nick Mancuso and Recording Secretary Eunice Rodriguez. Then they took part in a training session in which they were given a glimpse of the way wokers win job benefits through contract negotiations. Teams of youngsters came up with suggestions in which their lives at school could be improved. One idea -- almost unanimously endorsed -- was to replace the current typical nutritious lunchroom menu with goodies from Mickey D's. After a lunch of pizza, they traveled with their sponsors throughout the building, asking questions and operating computers, copiers and fax machines. Bernadette Bradley, assistant director of the Citywide Division, also gave the youngsters lessons in arts and crafts before they joined their relatives in the building to see for themselves what their actual daily jobs entailed |
