Newsline: May 2001 SCHOLARSHIP FUND OFFERS HOPE TO TEAMSTER YOUTH Keeping alive the dream of James R. Hoffa, the legendary former Teamsters General President, a scholarship fund named in his honor is opening the doors of education to dozens of Teamster families and their children. The James R. Hoffa Scholarship Fund will distribute $300,000 in scholarships this year. Twenty-five children of Teamsters will receive $10,000 scholarships, and 50 will receive $1,000 each. The scholarships are distributed equitably among the five regions of the union. "My father believed that education should be available to everyone," current General President James P. Hoffa said. "By building and sustaining this fund, we are putting his belief into action and continuing to send Teamster sons and daughters to college. At a recent dinner in St. Louis, Missouri, headlined by comedian/actor Denis Leary, more than 650 friends of labor joined Hoffa to raise money for the fund. But such events "are about more than money," said Hoffa. "The money raised will ensure that even more working class-children will be able to pursue their dreams of a better life through higher education." The James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to help Teamsters' dependents obtain the education that is crucial to their advancement in the new millennium. At its November 1999 meeting, the Teamsters General Executive Board passed a resolution authorizing the creation of the stand-alone" not-for-profit scholarship fund dedicated to Hoffa's memory. James R Hoffa became a Teamster member in 1934 and served as General President for 14 years. In recognition of his tireless service to the union and its members, he was honored as General President Emeritus for life. |
