SSAs Awarded for Heroism During 9/11 Disaster at WTC

The New York City Central Labor Council saluted the men and women in school safety for their heroism during the 9/11 disaster last month with a Special Distinguished Service Award.

The event, commemorating the worst disaster in U.S. history, was held at City Hall and attended by prominent labor and political leaders.

In accepting the award on behalf of the school safety members of Local 237, President Carl Haynes stated:

“Although the city’s fire, police, EMS and Port Authority Police were the true heroes in this tragedy because too many of them made the ultimate sacrifice to save the lives of the people in the WTC complex, there were many other unsung heroes, too, who faced down the danger to do their duty that day.

“I am immensely proud of Local 237 school safety agents who converged on the World Trade Center from all the boroughs to help the NYPD already on the scene with the rescue effort without knowing what was to come. I shudder to think what would have happened to the hundreds of school children in the immediate vicinity of ground zero had these agents not been there to help evacuate them. We thank our school safety officers and the other brave men and women of Local 237 for their heroic efforts that fateful day.

“This acknowledgement today from the Central Labor Council means so much to Local 237’s school safety officers.”

The award reads:
