Team Sponsored by Local 237 Makes the Softball Playoffs

The Ravenswood Houses Angels, sponsored for three years by Local 237, were very impressive in their last games on the way to the championship playoffs which began Aug. 10 in Lindsay Park in Brooklyn.

In their last season game, they crushed the Caribes 12-0 behind the strong pitching of José Toro. Only the week before, again with Toro pitching, they destroyed the team from Ellie’s Deli by a lopsided 24-0 shutout.

The Angels copped first place in their division with a record of eight wins, one tie and one loss.

The team members and their managers visited union headquarters Aug. 8 to express their appreciation to President Carl Haynes and the Executive Board for their continued support of the ball club.

The general manager is Alex Saez, a Caretaker J at Ravenswood Houses in Queens. Assistant managers are his brother Alexis, sister Linda, and Ileana Cotto.

The Angels played Edwin’s Travel Braves to seek the chance to compete in the League Championships.

The “Kids Against Drugs League” was created to afford youngsters the opportunity to play ball and avoid the dangerous temptations found in the inner city neighborhoods. How well it has worked out can be judged by Matthew Arvelo, one of the Ravenswood stars, who has been awarded a full four-year scholarship to attend LaSalle Academy in Manhattan.
