SSAs Assist in Baby’s Unexpected Arrival

In a most unusual situation, three school safety agents found themselves assisting a math teacher recently in a basic addition problem at John Bowne High School in Flushing.

SSA Level 3 Eldica Ferris said she was on duty in the school at about 2:45 p.m. April 28 when she received a report that math instructor Regina Wensek was not feeling well and was seeking to leave the school.

Ferris dispatched SSAs Marlo Denegall and Carolyn Woods to see what assistance they could offer.

When the agents arrived at the third floor classroom, the teacher told them she was expecting the arrival of her second child anytime between May 5 and 10. She added, however, that she thought the baby, although due for a week or two, was about to make an unscheduled appearance.

The agents cleared the students out of the classroom and made the teacher comfortable on the schoolroom floor. The agents checked and found that the teacher was absolutely right. Contractions were coming at only about five minutes apart and the arrival of the new school visitor was almost at hand.

Denegall radioed Ferris and advised her of the situation. Ferris asked if the teacher’s water broke.

When told it had not, she rushed outside the school so she could call for an ambulance.

That done, she joined her two associates in the classroom. By the time she arrived, the teacher’s water had broken and she had also been joined by a biology teacher, the school nurse and a woman dean.

They covered the windows of the door into the classroom to keep the scene from prying eyes and together assisted the new mother to welcome the surprise arrival. Although the umbilical cord was wrapped around the infant’s throat, they succeeded in unwrapping it and inducing the child to breathe normally.

When Emergency Medical Technicians arrived, they cut the cord and transported the 6-pound little girl and her mother to the New York Hospital.

All are recovering well.
