Council Member Visits 237; Praises School Safety Agents

Council Member Leroy G. Comrie of Queens stopped by union headquarters recently to express support for Local 237 school safety agents during one of the title’s general meetings.

Comrie praised the members for their commitment to the city and its children and urged them to stay focused and united on their goal for better pay and working conditions.

The group, which represents 4,000 members, is grossly underpaid and gets no respect from the NYPD. Comrie told them that he and his colleagues at the City Council learned a great deal about the problems within the School Safety Division as a result of Local 237’s hearing at the City Council last February on violence in city schools.

At that meeting, President Carl Haynes and several school safety agents testified that morale is low among SSAs because of low pay, inadequate equipment and lack of respect from management.

Comrie said he and his City Council colleagues would do “whatever is within our powers” to help improve the salary and working conditions for school safety agents.
