SSA Williams Goes Beyond the Call of Duty
School Safety Agent Louis C. Williams confirmed what Local 237 President Carl Haynes tells the city every chance he gets: “Peace officers go beyond call the duty.”
On the day after Thanksgiving, at about 2 p.m., a young man was fatally shot on a Rockaway subway platform during an attempted robbery. At the same time, SSA Williams was riding the train that stopped at the Beach 36 St. station.
When the doors opened, a group of terrified people rushed in and warned him to take cover. Then he heard gunshots and ducked. “I looked outside the
door,” he says, “and saw two guys fly by; a perpetrator and a cop chasing him.”
He stepped off the train to find the officer with a bloodied face aiming a revolver at a fleeing suspect. “I dropped my bag and umbrella as the perpetrator ran toward me, and pulled my cuffs out,” says Williams. “Then I twisted him to the ground, cuffed him and held him face down until help arrived.”
Meanwhile, the wounded officer kept the gun pointed at the suspect as Williams identified himself by flashing his SSA shield and I.D.
When detectives showed up they kept Williams busy until after 10 that night. “They asked me so many questions you’d think I was the perp,” jokes Williams, who was highly praised for his valor and assistance by all the officers at the 101 Precinct. He also received a Certificate of Merit from the Honor Legion of the New York Police Department at a ceremony held Jan. 13.
