Local 237 Roofers Ratify Contract
Local 237’s Roofers and Supervisors of Roofers voted 39 to 7 (85 percent) to ratify a contract settlement with the city last month.
The contract, which ran for five years and three months beginning July 1, 1999, is patterned after the rate of pay set by the New York City Comptroller for Local 8. Local 237 roofers employed by the city and New York City Housing Authority for the entire length of the contract will receive retroactive
wages of more than $35,400, excluding overtime, which will be calculated separately and on an individual basis.
The contract, which includes a one-percent productivity savings for the city, also provides for an increase in employer contribution to the roofers’ annuity fund.
The pact covers the period from July 1, 1999, to September 30, 2004. The union is still negotiating a contract for several other skilled trades titles, including maintenance, elevator mechanics, plasterers, bricklayers and mason’s helpers.
Contract negotiations for maintenance workers continued October 12 between the city and Local 237 negotiators, including Local 237 President Carl Haynes, Citywide Director and Secretary-Treasurer Gregory Floyd, Housing Director Ed Kane and Deputy Director for the Skilled Trades Titles Donald
Arnold. “The city made an offer and we told them we would take it under advisement,” Haynes said.
