Free Tax Help for Members Who Are Eligible for EITC


Starting February 2007, Local 237 will again provide free tax preparation for members who may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). To qualify for free tax assistance, households with children may earn no more than $40,000 and households without children no more than $20,000.

The EITC is a cash refund from the federal, state and city governments that ranges from about $555 to $6,000. To get the credit, you must file your taxes – even if you don’t owe any taxes. The chart below helps you determine whether you meet the “Maximum Income” requirement and how much credit you may be eligible to receive:

Local 237 members who may be eligible for the EITC may make an appointment to meet with a professional tax preparer, free of charge, at union headquarters at 216 West 14 Street in Manhattan, on the 6th floor.

Appointments can be scheduled between 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the following days:
Feb. 6, Tues. • Feb. 15, Thurs. • Feb. 22, Thurs. • Mar. 6, Tues. • Mar. 15, Thurs. • Mar. 22, Thurs.

Call Local 237 at 646-638-8610 to make an appointment as soon as possible for free tax preparation. If you can’t schedule an appointment at the union, call New York City’s information line at 311 to locate one of 10 Voluntary Income Tax Assistance sites sponsored by Food Change, a nonprofit organization, in the five boroughs.

Below is a list of documents you must bring to your appointment with the union’s EITC tax preparer:
  • Picture ID.
  • Social Security card (or a copy, or a letter from the SS Administration).
  • W-2 from all jobs held in 2006.
  • 1099 G form (unemployment) if applicable.
  • 1099 INT form (if you have bank interest to report).
  • If claiming child dependent care, bring the name and Social Security number of babysitter or EIN number of the agency, and the total fees paid for the year.
  • 1098 T form, (tuition).
  • 10908 E form (student loan).
  • Date of birth for everyone listed on your return.
  • Direct deposit account and routing number, if applicable.
