STATEMENT BY CARL HAYNES, PRESIDENT OF THE SCHOOL SAFETY AGENT’S UNION, ON ARREST OF PAROLEE WHO KILLED ACTRESS

The fact that four School Safety Agents had previously encountered Rudy Fleming, the alleged shooter of the actress in Manhattan last Thursday, comes as no surprise to the 3,300 School Safety Agents whose job it is to apprehend and search students for lethal weapons.

It has been three years since the four School Safety Agents confronted the then 16-year-old Port Richmond High School student at a Truancy Center on Staten Island when Fleming pulled a gun on them. Even after armed NYPD officers drew their weapons and forced Fleming to put down his weapon, the Safety Agents were the ones who finally wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him. Countless other agents face similar situations every day on the job but are defenseless and sometimes left isolated in dangerous situations because School Safety Agents are still working without protective body armor and inoperable radios.

Much like the recent victim who was unprotected in the face of potential violence, School Safety Agents routinely face life-threatening situations in the course of doing their job but carry only a flashlight, handcuffs and radios when confronting students believed to be carrying a weapon. This has to change.

For years, Teamsters Local 237 has been asking the New York City Police Department’s Division of School Safety to provide the men and women who work to keep our schools safe with appropriate protective equipment, but to no avail. We are working with the City Council for support on this issue. We believe it’s time for the city to reconsider our request.
