FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 7, 2007 Contact: Tania Lambert 212-924-2000 Carl Haynes, President of Teamsters Local 237, to Retire March 31 New York City — Carl Haynes, president of Teamsters Local 237 for almost 14 years, today announced his decision to retire on March 31. Haynes has been a member of Teamsters Local 237 for 47 years and will continue to serve as a vice president on the executive board of Local 237’s parent union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), and director of its Public Sector Division. Haynes, who holds leadership positions at the city, state and national levels, including the Municipal Labor Council, the Municipal Labor Committee, the State AFL-CIO and the IBT, said he is “Looking forward to passing the baton. It’s a great feeling to retire knowing that my successor will not face some of the challenges that I had to deal with when I took over as president,” Haynes said. He added, “Our union is in much better shape today than it was in 1993.” The son of a railroad worker and a graduate of West Virginia State College, Haynes joined Local 237 in 1960 when he went to work for the New York City Housing Authority as a housing assistant. There he made a name for himself after leading a successful strike in 1967, as head of the Housing Assistant chapter, that substantially increased salaries and working conditions for all employees. The strike catapulted his career. He joined the Local’s staff as a business agent the following year, and soon after that was named assistant director and then director of the union’s Housing Division. He was elected a trustee on the union’s Executive Board in 1978, and in 1983 became vice president. He succeeded Barry Feinstein as president in April 1993 after Feinstein was removed from office by The Independent Review Board ("IRB"), a three-member panel established by the 1992 Consent Decree with the United States District Court to oversee IBT affairs. Haynes was elected to a five-year term in 1994, and re-elected in 1999 and again in 2004. During his presidency, Haynes was elected three times to serve as Teamster representative on the AFL-CIO Executive Council until he resigned from that board in 2005. He won re-election in 2006 as a national vice president on the executive board of the IBT. His successor is expected to be named March 30 during a meeting of the executive board. Teamsters Local 237 is the largest Local in the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, with more than 23,000 municipal employees in New York City agencies, the Housing Authority and several municipalities on Long Island. |
