FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 16, 2006 Contact: Moronke Oshin 212-924-2000 ext. 8593 TEAMSTERS LOCAL 237'S MAINTENANCE WORKERS APPROVE NEW 51-MONTH CONTRACT New York City — Local 237's Maintenance Workers voted today to accept a 51-month contract that provides for a compounded 10.2 percent overall increase, Welfare Fund benefits and retroactive pay for the length of the agreement. The Maintenance workers, who work for the City and the Housing Authority, ratified their contract by a vote of 721-281 on March 16, 2006. The package, which covers the period from October 1, 2001 to January 12, 2006, includes wage increases of 3%, 1%, 2.60% and 3.25% partially funded through productivity savings, including, lower starting salary for new workers, the loss of paid bereavement and jury duty days, and contract extensions. Members also chose to convert their $1,000 bonus lump sum into an annual rate increase worth 0.25%. In addition, the Maintenance Workers will receive retroactive pay for the length of the pact, estimated at approximately $8,516 but does not include any overtime worked during that period, which will be calculated separately on an individual basis. "The ratification vote shows that most of the Maintenance Workers recognized that they have a good solid contract," said Local 237 President Carl Haynes. "They should be proud of themselves and the members of their bargaining committee for working hard to come up with creative strategies to avoid the "give-backs" that the City imposed on many other unions," Haynes added. The ballot count was conducted by the American Arbitration Association (AAA) -- an independent firm -- at their offices in Midtown Manhattan. |
