TEAMSTERS LOCAL 237 CITYWIDE AND HOUSING MEMBERS VOTE UNANIMOUSLY TO RATIFY EXTENDED CONTRACT

New York City — Local 237’s Citywide and Housing division members voted overwhelmingly, May 17, to ratify a 12-month and 47-day extension to their current contract which provides for a wage increase of 3.25 percent and a $100 increase to their welfare fund.

The Citywide members, who work at various city agencies and include School Safety Agents, Hospital Police and other hospital staff and Public Health Educators, voted 3840-70 in favor of the contract. Housing members, who work for the New York City Housing Authority, voted 2979-53 in favor of the agreement.

The contract extension covers the period from August 7, 2005 to September 22, 2006 for the Union’s 12,000 Citywide division members, and November 7, 2005 to December 23, 2006 for the 10,000 Housing members. It includes:
  • A wage increase of 3.25 percent retroactive to August 7, 2005, and

  • Effective August 7, 2006, a $100 increase in the employer’s annual contribution to the Union’s Welfare Fund for active employees and retirees, in exchange for extending the contract an additional 30 days beyond the 12 months.
The contract also includes a side letter agreement that allows for the Union to continue negotiating the possible one (1) percent productivity-based wage increase that is still pending from the current contract.

“I consider this ratification vote, a vote of confidence in the work of the Union’s negotiating committees,” said Local 237 President Carl Haynes. “This is the first time in more than 30 years that this union has been able to bring up to date all of its contracts in the city, and that makes me feel proud. Our members are feeling the pinch of the economy and this raise is a nice piece of change that our members can clearly use when they receive their paychecks some time in July.”

The ratification votes were counted by the American Arbitration Association at their midtown offices.

The union’s negotiators include 50 rank-and-file members, President Haynes, Secretary-Treasurer Gregory Floyd, Housing Division Director Edmund Kane, lead attorneys Basil Patterson and Barry Peek from the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English and Klein; and Allen Brawer of Policy Research Group.

Teamsters Local 237 represents more than 23,000 municipal workers in New York City and on Long Island, and is the largest Local in the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
