Retirees: Programs, Services and Opportunity for Involvement

Retirement Planning. Pre-retirement programs simplify the complex process of retiring from the municipal workforce. Programs include:
  • Pension counseling, by appointment, for pre-retirees and recent retirees.
  • Retirement planning seminar series every fall and spring.
  • Information and updates on pension options.
Consultation and Assistance. Wherever retirees live, the Retiree Division, in coordination with other sections of the union, answers questions and helps resolve problems and concerns related to:
  • making the transition from work to retirement
  • relocation
  • family concerns
  • second careers
  • Social Security and Medicare
  • health insurance
  • caring for an older relative or friend
  • use of leisure time
  • local services such as homecare, transportation, counseling, recreation, housing, or support programs; and more!
Benefits Education, including semiannual seminars with representatives from health plans, Medicare, the city, and the union's Retirees' Benefit Fund, and articles in Retiree News & Views newsletter.

Monthly Membership Meetings at union headquarters in Manhattan.

Neighborhood Membership Meetings in Bronx/Westchester, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and on Long Island.

Periodic Conferences for retirees who live in Puerto Rico and Florida.

Retiree Education Program. Classes in subjects such as current events, acting, theater, labor history, literature, ethics, photography, art, and t'ai chi.

Recreational Activities, including theater trips, museum outings, walking tours, boat rides, and day trips.

Annual Events, including Founders Day, summer picnic, "Fall Foliage" outing, holiday party, midwinter dance, Martin Luther King, Jr., program, and others.

Committees. The Activities, Education, and Telephone Committees and the Sunshine Club are open to all retirees.

The Oral History Project, an ongoing effort to record and preserve the history of the union.

The Retiree Division publishes an award-winning monthly newsletter, Retiree News & Views, to provide up-to-date information and analysis.

Working members are encouraged to contact the Retiree Division to discuss their retirement plans. Retirees and their families are urged to participate in activities and to visit, call, or write the staff for assistance at any time.
