Retiree Division

I began working 01-03-1966 at the East River Houses as a Teller. I transferred from the New York City Corrections Department. My tenure there was 02-05-62 to 12-31-65. I do not remember if I was in a union while employed by the NYCCD and I do not remember which housing project I was in or the year I joined the union.

But what I do remember—Union dues were being garnished every payday. Then we were given the choice to decide if we wanted the union to deduct dues or we could have more “take home” pay. I opted for more “take home” pay.

The union took the matter to court and won.

Well, now in 2002 I consider that one of the best things that happened for me because of the pension check and other benefits that help me so much. That is Brotherhood

This year the Retiree Division held our Black History Celebration on February 21,2024. In keeping with the theme of this year’s Black History Month, “African American and the Arts” the Franck Muhel Dance Ensemble presented a dance recital which depicted the journey of a determined slave “Tado” who escaped a plantation in the West Indies in search of justice and freedom. The recital was portrayed in 5 Acts, which detailed Tado’s travels through various Caribbean Islands to reach the land of freedom New York. The retirees enjoyed the presentation and expressed appreciation for such rich history.
