After the de Blasio administration announced that it had reached a $625,000 settlement with Jazmine Headley, the Brooklyn mother whose son was ripped from her arms during her arrest at a Human Resources Administration benefits center in December 2018, the head of the union representing the officers asserted that Mayor de Blasio was responsible for the lawsuit being filed because he assigned blame to the peace officers before the incident had been reviewed.
HRA faced intense backlash after several Police Officers and HRA peace officers were seen on cellphone video yanking Ms. Headley’s 18-month-old son from her arms at a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program office on Dec. 7, 2018. The incident escalated after HRA staff called the police to remove Ms. Headley, who argued with security guards and refused to get off the floor after waiting for four hours to restore suspended child-care benefits.
