For much of the past two years, as city officials ceased making payments into the benefit funds of the Law Enforcement Employees Benevolent Association, union President Kenneth Wynder denied claims that the union owed $500,000 to its dental and prescription-drug providers and insisted those steps were taken to force him to accept unfavorable contract terms.
But Federal prosecutors in Manhattan July 13 unsealed a complaint by an FBI Agent that accused Mr. Wynder and LEEBA Treasurer Steven Whittick of embezzling more than $500,000 from LEEBA's annuity fund and individual members' retirement accounts and alleged they "used these stolen funds to enrich themselves at union members' expense."
