HPO Brooks Honored
Harlem Hospital Center HPO LaTanya Brooks and Harlem Hospital Director of Police Timothy A. Kennedy
While off-duty in a subway station, Hospital Police Officer LaTanya Brooks and her colleague, Watchperson Wanda Moore, came to the assistance of two NYPD Transit Bureau Officers who were struggling with a male perpetrator they were attempting to arrest for robbery. The suspect, about 6' 2" tall and weighing 275 pounds, was getting the best of the two Transit Officers. As onlookers watched, the robber threw the officers' handcuffs into the tracks and grabbed a stick to use as a weapon against the them. Fearing that one of the officers would be thrown into the tracks, Brooks and Moore identified themselves and grabbed the offender's legs and took him to the ground. Once on the ground, one of the officers were able to radio in a call and they slowly gained control over the suspect.
In recognition of their bravery, The Hospital Police Central Office issued Exemplary Police Service Metals and Certificates To Hospital Police Officer LaTanya Brooks and Watchperson Wanda Moore. Harlem Hospital Police issued Meritorious Service Awards and NYPD Transit Bureau presented each officer with a Certificate of Appreciation. They performed in an exemplary manner without regard for their personal safety and their immediate actions prevented further injury and a possible escape.
The Officers sustained minor injuries during the arrest.
