Local 237 has filed grievances and an improper practice petition to force the Housing Authority to honor our contract.
NYCHA management has refused to pay Alternative Work Schedule (AWS) Caretakers the ten hours of holiday pay they are entitled to for both the Memorial Day and 4th of July holidays. The union has filed two grievances demanding that Caretakers be paid in full for those days and are paid for 10, rather than 8, hours of holiday pay for all future holidays. Local 237 strongly believes it is unsafe for staff to start work at 6 a.m. or leave at 7 p.m. due to poor lighting and scaffolding that obscures the view of cameras as well as unsecured doors.
To protect members’ health and safety, the union requested that a judge temporarily halt NYCHA from forcing Caretakers, Superintendents and Assistant Superintendents to work AWS schedules. On Friday, October 18, a judge ruled in our favor. We have a hearing set for October 31, at which time a judge will make a final determination.
Additionally, Local 237 has filed a petition with the Office of Collective Bargaining to stop Housing Managers from working late shifts. NYCHA has ignored our previous agreement to stop scheduling Managers to work until 7:30 pm on Wednesdays. Not only is this disruptive to Mangers' lives, it poses a serious risk to their safety.
